Reverend Matthew S. O’Donnell is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago, ordained on May 12, 2012 at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. He served as the Pastor of St. Columbanus Catholic Church, located in Chicago’s Park Manor neighborhood, since July 1, 2013 and is thrilled to be the newly appointed pastor at St. Moses the Black. He is also proud to be the Pastor of Augustus Tolton Catholic Academy, the first STREAM school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He previously served as the Associate Pastor of St. Ailbe Catholic Church (2012-2013). Fr. Matt was raised in St. Fabian Parish in Bridgeview, IL, where he first heard his call to the priesthood.
Fr. Matt holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, with a concentration on Intercultural Studies and Ministry. Fr. Matt graduated in July 2015 with a Master of Theology degree from the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University of Louisiana. He previously completed a Master of Divinity degree and a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology from Mundelein Seminary. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from Loyola University Chicago. He is a proud alum of St. Laurence High School in Burbank.
Fr. Matt serves in various leadership roles within the Archdiocese of Chicago, including on the College of Consultors, the Chairman of the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council, and a member of the Renew My Church Steering Committee. He has also served as an Adjunct Faculty member at the University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.
Fr. Matt has a great love and passion for ministering in the Black Catholic community. He is a spirit filled preacher who feels humbled and honored to share God’s Holy Word—always with the hope of drawing just one more soul closer to Christ!
